AN ANALYSIS OF CULTURAL CONTENT OF THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK "ENGLISH FOR NUSANTARA (2022)" FOR SECOND GRADE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The integration of cultural elements in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching is an effort to foster cross-cultural awareness and equip students with intercultural and international communication competencies in the era of globalization. This study aims to analyze the representation of cultural content in the “English for Nusantara” textbook for second grade of junior high school students. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis method, the study examines both the types and aspects of culture featured in the textbook. Cultural types are categorized into source, target, and international culture, while cultural aspects include products, practices, perspectives, and persons. The findings reveal that source culture is predominantly represented (68%), while target culture culture accounts for only 8% and international culture 24%, with a total of 71 identified cultural items. Regarding cultural aspects, cultural products are the most frequently depicted (47%), followed by cultural practices (40%), persons (9%), and perspectives (4%) from a total 45 items. This study highlights the role of textbooks in introducing students to cultural diversity and encourages the development of materials that support intercultural competence in language education.
