Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the effect of using scattergories game
on students' vocabulary mastery for teaching reading in eighth grade of SMP Islam
Andalusia 2 Kebasen, Banyumas. This study used a quantitative method which
adopted a quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the
eighth-grade students with a total number of 240, meanwhile for the total sample of
this study was 60 students, and it was carried out in classes VIII F as an
experimental group and VIII H as a control group. The experimental group was
taught using the scattergories game, while the control group was taught without
scattergories game. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test
consisting of 30 validated multiple-choice questions based on narrative text. The
results were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The findings showed that both
the experimental and control groups experienced improvement in vocabulary
mastery. The Paired Samples T-test results indicated a statistically significant
difference between the pre-test and post-test scores in both groups (Sig. 2-tailed =
0.000 < 0.05), suggesting that both teaching methods were effective. However, the
independent t-test revealed that the experimental group achieved significantly
higher post-test scores than the control group (Sig. = 0.001 < 0.05). It can be
concluded that the use of scattergories game is more effective.
