THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ROLE-PLAY METHOD FOR READING SKILLS AT SECOND GRADE OF SMP N 2 SOKARAJA BANYUMAS



Abstrack: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role-play method
on reading skills of second students at SMP N 2 Sokaraja Banyumas. The research
method used was quasi-experiment. The research sample consisted of two classes,
which were experimental class that used role-play method in learning
advertisement text, and control class that used discussion and presentation
method. Data collection techniques used pre-test and post-test with instruments in
the form of role-play reading tests. Data analysis was conducted using Mann-
Whitney U test because the data was not normally distributed. The results showed
a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.431 (p > 0.05), indicating that there was no
significant effect of using the role-play method on students' reading skills
specifically on second grade students of SMP N 2 Sokaraja Banyumas. Despite
statistically insignificant, the application of role-play has a positive effect on
students' active participation and self-confidence in the learning process. This
study suggests the need for further research with a longer time allowance or
adjustments to the method and there needs to be an adequate understanding
between teachers and students regarding how to use this method in learning so
that students can adapt easily and optimized.
